Gallipoli Underpass

In 2006, Leed Engineering and Construction formed a Joint Venture with Thiess, and together with a local design firm, architect and community relations specialist, became the AdelaideConnect Project Team. AdelaideConnect delivered a concept design for the Gallipoli Underpass through an innovative Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) procurement model that drew on the combined skills of the team. This ECI method was a major factor in allowing the consortium to deliver an outcome that is a landmark we can value now and in the future.

Construction had to be carried out while accommodating traffic flows of up to 40,000 vehicles per day and with minimal disruption to local shops and a medical centre.

Value for money through innovation

AdelaideConnect produced a concept design which achieved a saving of 25% from the Principal’s original budget, through the creativity of Value for Money and Innovation teams who challenged the client’s reference design. Further innovation after completion of the concept design led to a further 11% saving in the construction price.

Community engagement

Value for money is not just about cutting costs. The functionality of the solution was demonstrated to community stakeholders through ‘flyover’ visualisations developed from the engineering design models and Aimsum traffic simulations. A project specific website and 1800 telephone number allowed direct communication with AdelaideConnect staff during the development of the concept design.

The inclusion of consultation specialists in the AdelaideConnect team enabled the designers to appreciate community concerns first hand and to integrate community objectives into the engineering design.

This complex intersection was constructed with no complete shutdowns of South Road and only five weekend restrictions on ANZAC Highway which still allowed for buses. Excellent teamwork and project management saw the project delivered early and under budget with no lost time through injury.
